Intrusive memories in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are a key aspect of reliving traumatic experiences. They can manifest as flashbacks, nightmares, or other forms of unintentional emotional recall.
These intrusive symptoms are fundamental to PTSD, a mental health issue that can arise after someone goes through a traumatic event. Commonly grouped under the term "intrusive memories," these symptoms can lead to various ways of re-experiencing the trauma.
Unwanted and involuntary memories are just one type of intrusive memory associated with PTSD. Some of these memories can make you feel as if you are reliving the moment when the trauma occurred.
Are intrusive memories a typical sign of PTSD?
Yes, intrusive memories are a key symptom of PTSD and are essential for a diagnosis according to the criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, text revision (DSM-5-TR).
To be diagnosed with PTSD, individuals must show at least one symptom related to intrusive memories, which can include:
- recurring, distressing memories of the traumatic event
- nightmares
- dissociative reactions, like flashbacks
- mental or physical distress triggered by reminders of the trauma
Since PTSD can involve a wide variety of re-experiencing symptoms, it's hard to pinpoint the exact prevalence of different types of intrusive memories. Flashbacks and nightmares are among the most researched symptoms.
In a 2018 study with 166 participants diagnosed with PTSD, 49% reported experiencing pain flashbacks, where they relive the pain they felt during the trauma.
A more recent 2023 study with 398 individuals suffering from PTSD or complex PTSD (CPTSD) found that around 92% experienced nightmares, with those suffering from CPTSD reporting them more often.
CPTSD is a clinical term that refers to PTSD with more severe and lasting symptoms, often linked to repeated or prolonged trauma exposure.
