Season 2, Episode 9

To heal from the pain of dysfunctional families and maddening memories, it is essential to focus on validating your experiences, setting boundaries, and rebuilding your sense of self. It is a process that requires intentional effort and often professional guidance.
Acknowledge and process your trauma
Validate your experience. Recognize that your pain is valid and that you are not to blame for the dysfunction you experienced. Many survivors of dysfunctional families were taught to minimize their own feelings, making it critical to accept the reality of the harm that was done.
Allow yourself to grieve. The healing process involves grieving the childhood and family relationships you deserved but never received. Allow yourself to feel the anger, sadness, guilt, and other emotions associated with your experiences without judgment.
Journal your experiences. Writing can be a therapeutic tool for processing emotions and gaining clarity. It can also help you recognize patterns of behavior and break through denial.
Reclaim your identity. Dysfunctional families often force individuals into specific roles, like the scapegoat or hero, which can obscure your true self. Reclaim your identity by exploring your own values, interests, and goals, independent of your family's expectations.
